WPATH Files (2024)

Author: Mia Hughes (Environmental Progress). Position in chronology: timeline 2024-03.

Summary

In March 2024 Environmental Progress (lead author Mia Hughes) published a report based on leaked internal WPATH communications, including chat logs, internal lectures and committee deliberations. The report documents cases in which WPATH members voiced concerns about competence for informed consent, comorbid conditions and the empirical basis of the SOC-8 age recommendations. The authenticity of the documents has not been contested by WPATH.

1. Source

The report The WPATH Files was released by Environmental Progress / Mia Hughes on 4 March 2024. Source material consisted of internal WPATH chat messages (2021–2023), recordings of internal lectures and committee minutes.1

2. Substantive points

  • Discussions among members about minors' understanding of loss of fertility and sexual function.
  • Internal acknowledgement that psychiatric comorbidity and autism are common among referred youth.
  • Debate about the scientific basis of the age thresholds in draft SOC-8.

3. Status as a source

The WPATH Files are not a peer-reviewed publication. On dutchprotocol.com they are — in line with the editorial methodology — cited as a primary document of the debate, with explicit mention of that status. Several peer-reviewed publications have since drawn on or criticised parts of the material.
